Shooting sports have a history spanning hundreds of years. Their origins are linked to the development of firearms, which appeared in Europe in the 14th century. Initially used for military purposes and hunting, accurate shooting gradually became a form of competition and recreation.
The first documented shooting competitions took place in the 15th century in Germany and Switzerland. Shooting guilds brought together townspeople and craftspeople, improving defensive skills and strengthening community ties. Winners received the prestigious title of shooting king.
In the 19th century, more accurate firearms and the creation of clubs helped shooting become an organised sport. It featured at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
The federation now known as the ISSF — International Shooting Sport Federation — was founded in 1907. It oversees international competition and develops the rules of a sport that has spread around the world.
Shooting guilds existed in Poland as early as the Middle Ages. The sport grew rapidly after independence was restored in 1918. The Polish Sport Shooting Federation was founded in 1921. Polish athletes have won Olympic, world and European championship medals.
